BIOGRAPHY/PHILOSOPHY

JOSE HIGUERAS BIO (PHOTO)
Born in a small town outside of Granada, Spain, Jose Higueras is the result of hard work and dedication. Through a move to a larger city with larger opportunities, Jose learned and perfected his craft as a young child in Barcelona, Spain. His game was rooted in the qualities he is still well known for today: patience, hard work, and sense of fair play. Jose became one of the top tennis players in his native country and went on to represent Spain in the Davis Cup and as a member of the Spanish World Cup Team won titles in 1978 and 1983. Jose led an illustrious career as a player in which he won 15 ATP tournament titles and attained a top ten world ranking. Career highlights include wins at Houston, Boston, La Quinta, Indianapolis, and Hamburg. In 1983 and 1984 he qualified for the Masters. Jose’s most valued honor is the ATP Sportsmanship Award he received in 1983. After these respectable achievements, Jose made the transition from professional tennis player to professional coach so he could pass on his knowledge and passion for the game. In his near two decades of coaching, Jose has worked with and developed some of the greatest players in the world. From helping Michael Chang win a French Open title at the age of 17, to helping develop Jim Courier on his way to seven Grand Slam titles, to improving the game of countless other prominent players including past Grand Slam winners as Pete Sampras, and Carlos Moya, as well as, Todd Martin, Sergi Bruguera, Jennifer Capriati, and Chanda Ruben, to name a few.

PHILOSOPHY
More than just another good name put to use in the commercial world of tennis, Jose Higueras Tennis delivers results.  With a maximum enrollment of 20, students will have total and direct access to Jose.  Just as important, Jose will manage and direct the coaching staff by arming them with his unlimited knowledge garnered over decades of experience.  Not tailored to the uncommitted, the Jose Higueras Tennis will provide the best competitive developmental experience by holding each student (and coach) accountable to a high standard of discipline.

Todd Martin's testimonial:
"When speaking of Jose Higueras it is impossible for me to avoid superlatives. He is simply the best and most knowledgeable coach that I have met. His sophisticated approach is communicated in simple and understandable terms which have enabled several players to be their best.”

Jim Courier’s testimonial: "Jose Higueras has helped shape numerous tennis players in his years of coaching players of all levels, including the very best. He has a unique ability to bring the best out of his pupils through his incredible understanding of technical skills and on-court strategy.

Just as important, and perhaps even rarer, is his ability to guide a student’s development of the mental skills necessary to cope with the challenges that tennis players face on a daily basis. They cannot be underestimated.

Jose changed me from a solid ball striker to a fully realized tennis player when we began working together when I was 20 years old. He changed the path of my tennis career. For that I am thankful. For his friendship to this day, I am grateful."

PROGRAMS

PROGRAM DETAILS
Jose Higueras Tennis is a highly focused, personalized training program available to both boarders and non-boarders. It is an extremely intimate program where the enrollment is limited to 15-20 students. This unique concept is directed and implemented personally by Jose Higueras and offers the following:

Coaching Staff:  A good coach is an individual, who with integrity, dedication, discipline and knowledge of his/her teachings, is able to maximize the potential of each student regardless of their level.  The goal of this program is not only to teach our student how to reach their maximum game potential, but through competition and discipline, give them the tools that will help them in whatever they endeavor in the future. Jose firmly believes in a small number of students per coach and the program ratio, on an average, is 3:1. Qualified coaches, hand-picked and trained by Jose, assist daily practice with Jose’s presence a majority of the time.

Court Time:  Weekday training consists of intensive morning and afternoon sessions totaling a minimum of 4 hours daily depending on the student’s needs. Optional weekend hitting and conditioning is also available.

Court Surfaces:  Most training sessions will be on hard courts but Jose strongly believes in the importance of clay court experience for the development of the student. Therefore we ensure clay-court training as well, to maximize the student’s potential.  Each student will develop a clear understanding of the differences of play on all court surfaces.

Match Analysis:  Through match statistics and “Dartfish” video analysis, students’ games are analyzed to correct flaws and to establish solid fundamentals.  Each student will be made aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses and will learn the maximum use of their individual weapons.

Off-Court Education:  Jose possesses an extensive knowledge of the game of tennis.  Students will have an opportunity at several intimate monthly meetings to learn from his years of experience as both a player and as a coach. Jose will discuss all the varied aspects of tennis: strategy, tactics, technique, shot selection, mental strength, and in general, everything pertinent to the game.

Conditioning:  Fitness is an essential key to the success of a tennis player.  Each student will have a personalized, supervised daily physical training program at the full gym adjacent to the courts. Emphasis is on improving the student’s agility, speed, footwork, balance and stamina.

Tournament Experience: Southern California is home to many great competitive tournaments.  For an additional fee, students of the program have the opportunity to travel to these tournaments with the supervision of their coaches.  Four to six week summer trips to Europe for training and competition are also available.
